How to Apply for an Abuse Prevention Order in Masssaschusetts

In Massachusetts, only certain people can apply for a 209A or restraining order.  To be eligible to apply for a restraining order you must be a husband or wife, former husband or wife, household member, former household member, partner, blood relative, ex-boyfriend or girlfriend of the defendant.  A restraining order is civil in nature, but theviolation of the abuse prevention order is a criminal offense.  If you are not any of these, you may want to look into obtaining a civil order or an harassment order. If you want to get a restraining order, you should go to court clerk’s office to fill out an application.  The application has many different questions that you will need to fill out.
