Mayhem is one of the most serious criminal charges in Massachusetts.  Mayhem is a crime in which tremendous violence is done onto the victim.  The state can prove mayhem three different ways.  In the first way to prove the defendant guilty of mayhem, the prosecution needs to prove that the defendant had malicious intent to maim or disfigure cuts or maims an ear, nose, lip or cuts off or disable limb of another person.

In second way to prove the defendant guilty of mayhem, the prosecution needs prove that the defendant aided in the commission of the mayhem crime.  In the final way, the prosecution needs to prove that the defendant had intent to maim, assaults another person with a dangerous weapon, substance or chemical and by such assault disfigures, cripples or inflicts serious physical injury.

If a defendant is convicted of mayhem, the defendant can face up to 20 years in state prison.  The defendant can also face up to a $1,000 fine or up to 2 ½ years in jail.
